Jean Paul Gaultier SS 2012 Couture: Channeling Amy Winehouse

I knew before Style even had a review last night exactly what Gaultier was going for in his latest couture collection. I mean aside from it being blatantly obvious of course. Gaultier took direct references from the great and semi-recently passed soul-filled singer Amy Winehouse.. one of my personal top choices in my own “collection” of musical influences. Amy Winehouse was one of the only artists who had me locking myself in my room belting out her heart jerking lyrics and had me wanting to rock an enormous beehive and wing-tip eyeliner.

Gaultier took some of the iconic streetstyle and stage style Winehouse looks and transformed them into a couture show worthy of adding to his other eclectic collections. One thing that really got me was the roundup near the end that took place after all the looks presented were show one by one. Each model was adorned with a veil.. almost as if to say we still mourn the passing of this young starlet. She, who was an influence to so many artists coming from the U.K. into America that have real soul, is now another one added to the “27 Club”. I personally can say I mourned her passing with great disappointment. Seeing her perform before the day I died was an item on my bucket list. Unfortunately she beat me to the punch.

So here I have chosen 6 looks that were the most typically “Amy”. The ones that made me feel as though I was staring her straight in the face. It’s almost like she never really left us.

Amy if your up there somewhere.. I hope you enjoyed the party I threw for you on the day of your passing. I sang your songs extra loud that night. Know that not everyone thought you were just another troubled startlet.. but an inspiration and a person that allowed me to relate to your music.. and get though times in my life that were difficult and real. If only you could see Gaultier now. You would be proud.
